History: Sylvain's Wiki and since he's from a Golden Deer recruit option Verdant Wind Summary
Personality:
The most important thing to consider when looking at Sylvain is the Faerghus ideal of knighthood. Loyal, protective, self-sacrificing, strong, heroic... all positive traits until they come at the expense of everything else. There is no room in the Faerghan tales for sensitivity, love, affection, weakness. It makes for a society that turns a blind eye to displays of weakness for the sake of saving face.
Even when those displays come from a child with no way to remove himself from an abusive household. Especially when those displays involve any kind of healthy coping mechanisms. When it means acknowledging a fault in the system.
Sylvain is not, naturally, a hateful person. Not really. Perhaps it would have been better for him, had he been. Faerghus ideals offer little support for a soft child that wanted nothing more than to please the people around him. Something that only opened him up to more abuse fron his brother and neglect from his father, things no one would dare acknowledge.
Without any healthy coping mechanisms or peers to learn them from Sylvain very quickly became bitter and angry. Those he cared for he would protect fiercely with unfailing loyalty. No matter their faults, no matter their failings, even when those same people allowed his endless abuse to continue, when their own inability to cope twisted friendship into something toxic and abusive.
He came to understand that the one thing that prevented him from having a loving family was also the one thing that everyone else wanted to use him for. So while his friends threw themselves into work and vengeance, shouting hateful things at each other and everyone around them... he took the exact opposite track. Perhaps his family did not love him but with a well placed joke and charming smile he could wrap complete strangers around his finger. A large part of why it was so easy was because they wanted to use him...
So he began to use them for whatever he wanted before they could use him instead.
What he wanted, usually, was to make them miserable. To hurt people for being so shallow, for being so willing to use others. He coped by inflicting his pain on others, punishing everyone else for having the life he'd been denied, for not stepping in to help him when he'd needed it. Never his friends, of course, no. They could do no wrong. He loves his friends, to a fault really.
But everyone else? Deserved what they got and he was just helping karma along. He has quite the reputation for being a flirt and leaving a trail of broken hearts in his wake but there are very few people that see through his charming persona to realize why he is the way he is. He intentionally lets it slip, once, for the Professor. Mercedes is one of the few people to recognize the underlying reasons for his playboy attitude, being as devastatingly intuitive as she is. When faced with someone that tries to genuinely talk to him as Sylvain, not the Heir to Gautier, not a Crest Bearer, not a Noble... he's actually supremely awkward, tripping over his words and stumbling through attempts to say things genuinely. Things that, inevitably, come out sounding like a line no matter how much he struggles.
Once the war begins and the rest of the world falls apart Sylvain has to face some hard truths about himself. With the ravages of war he cannot justify his casual cruelty anymore. All that hate and anger is left to fester, directed, instead, inward. The real source of all his suffering. Surely if he'd been stronger, braver, better his brother would not have despised him, he would not be such a failure.
The differences in Sylvain between Academy phase and War phase are a large part of why I prefer taking him from a route other than his own. It makes far more sense for him to be able to let go of some of the anger and grow to be a better person when surrounded by the overall far more well-adjusted and supportive Golden Deer students, many of whom are or have big brothers. Good brothers. Some of the best. Including the most powerful General in all of Fodlan.... who dotes on his baby sister and most certainly wears hair clips she made him when she was a little kid. The Golden Deer are far better equipped to help him learn how to be a more balanced individual.
Which helps him to regain some of the sensitive, loving traits he's spent so long denying in favor of more appropriate features of Knighthood. He lets himself be sincere once more, even though it opens him up to the possibility of so much hurt. He even finds it in him to poke fun at his old "skirt chasing" days. There is still a lot of hurt, a lot of doubt and bitterness under it all but he is also finally able to be gentler, kinder.
Be the kind of man he wants to be, not the Knight he's been expected to be.
Sin:
Envy is easily the most applicable for Sylvain. He is incredibly bitter about all the things people without the burden of crests take for granted. In his support with Byleth he actually threatens them for taking their own freedom for granted.
You know what? I'm a bit jealous. The whole time you were growing up, you never knew you had a Crest.
You were free. Nobody pretended to like you. I kind of hate you for that... You were a spoiled brat who should pay for that Crest. Maybe I'll collect the debt.
As much as he tries to laugh it off as a joke at the time similar sentiments come up repeatedly in his supports. His entire reason for being the flirty playboy is an attempt to use others before they have a chance to use him. He carries a lot of hatred toward people that would seek to use others for selfish reasons and, similarly, wrath would be quite appropriate. He seeks out the girls he uses as a way to cope with all that anger, breaking hearts in an attempt to make himself feel better.
There's also a measure of comfort in having someone need him, rely on him, even if it is entirely built on a lie. He desperately wants someone to want or need him for himself. That constant search for affection and approval regardless of how little he feels he really deserves it would also make lust or gluttony appropriate.
